Tastefully Local: Brewin' for Clyde

CLYDE – Our Town's Brewin' Coffee House and Gift Shop sits in one of the town's oldest Main Street buildings, dating to the late 19th century, and the restaurant's menu and decor takes customers back to an era of homemade soups, freshly made pies and baked goods created in the back.

Owner Sue Gedert opened the restaurant in May 1999, and she acknowledged Wednesday it incorporated a lot of local and family history elements into its makeup.

A mural on Our Town's wall was created by using a photo taken in 1908 of downtown Clyde, and Gedert said high school reunion groups from the 1950s and 1960s meet at the restaurant periodically to catch up on old times.

Gedert also produced one of her grandmother's pans from the 1930s, a pan used at her grandparents' old hotel/restaurant they operated on U.S. 20 before her birth.

"She and my mother were very good cooks and taught me a lot," Gedert, a Bowling Green State University graduate with a food/nutrition degree, said as she displayed the antique pan.

Before she became a restaurant owner, Gedert said she worked a number jobs, including stints at WSOS, the school system, nursing homes and hospitals. She said she eventually decided to try her hand at owning her own restaurant and bought the business formerly known as Brew Ha-Ha, where she used to drink tea.

"I was tired of working for everybody else," Gedert said.

Since opening the restaurant, Gedert said she's added a banquet room that seats 35 in the back of the business. Our Town's menu changes periodically, Gedert said, with new specials added from time-to-time.

The restaurant's menu includes more than 40 different kinds of homemade soups. Gedert said her turkey bacon club sandwich and chicken salad croissant are the two biggest customer favorites, in terms of sandwiches.

"My landlord says I could make soup out of anything left over, even birthday cake," Gedert said.

Our Town's also offers five different cups of coffee every day and pies that can be ordered for holidays and special occasions.
